I am a graduate student at the University of South Carolina studying urban sociology and stratification. I am the founder and editor of Postcards of Place. I love postcards because they can be a fun and personal way to share places, travel experiences, and reflections with friends and family (and now strangers on the internet). I send many of my postcards from my leisure travel, or even from the places I consider home. But I will send others from my regular travels to academic conferences. You can read about some of my travel adventures and thoughts on places here, here, and here.

I’ve always had a bit of wanderlust, and I’m at a point in my life where I’m able to act upon it. I currently live in Qatar, a smallish country in the Middle East, and work for the USO. My career is my passion and all the traveling I get to do is just a giant side benefit. Travel wise, I’m concentrating on my side of the world as it provides shorter plane rides and, culturally, a larger deviation from my norm. I’m living my dream: I have the perfect career working with our nation’s heroes on a daily basis, and get to travel the world. What more could a girl want? Feel free to follow my travels more closely and read about my life here.

My name is Alejandra, but I go by many variations of this name: Alex, Jandra, Ale-Ale-jandra, I respond to all of them! I am currently in between career paths so to speak. I am teaching as an Adjunct Instructor of Spanish in Columbia, SC, but I hope to get back to school and get my PhD in the fall of 2012. I can’t say that I ENJOY traveling, I’m actually pretty awful at it. Don’t get me wrong, I like to visit new places and experience new things and I’m a bit of a foodie, but the traveling, the getting from point A to point B, sucks for me. I’m terrified of flying, I’m anxious in car trips and I’ve never been on a cruise, but once I make it to my final destination, it’s absolutely perfect. All the anxieties are worth it. Writing post cards helps me remember how great it is to travel (in retrospect). It helps me re-live the moments and the laughs I shared with great friends and most it makes me WANT to travel again.
